Thanks to the imaginative, ambitious spirit of the founding members of the Irvington Garden Club, we will initiate our eleventh year of sponsoring markets in June.
A decade! Yes, that's right we've come a long way from our first year on Washington Street with few, if any, produce vendors.
Today, over fifty sellers frequently line the north east corner of Ellenberger Park for each market. Many have been with us since the beginning; to them and all the others who have taken space over the past decade we offer "thank you." To those joining us for the first time this year we say "welcome."
Our experienced market master, club volunteers, vendors, exhibitors and YOU will kick off the first of this year's five markets between the hours of noon - 3 PM on Sunday, June 13.
As in the past, you'll delight at the mouth-watering displays of delicious fruits, vine-ripened red tomatoes and colorful green, orange and red vegetables, FRESH bouquets of newly cut flowers, and tasty bakery goods.
As you move along, you find meats and cheeses, hickory maple syrup, ready to plant culinary herbs, and ever so sweet honey. To your right you might see a tasteful exhibit of hand crafted jewelry and what is probably very hard to carve; decorated gourds. By then you’d like a cold, quench thirsting, drink and perhaps a hand-pulled pork barbeque sandwich which you'll likely want to eat picnic style on a nearby table. Look leftward. Do you hear the music of an Irvington group in the distance? Go ahead, take a blanket, set in a nearby chair and listen for awhile. There's more to see! Have you missed anything? You'll want to visit the booths of local non profits including Irvington's pre-schools, staff members of Ellenberger Park, civic, and professional groups. And perhaps; if there's an election pending, you'll find a "wannabe" politician wanting to tell you "why" he should be elected to office. You've made several purchases. Now, before you leave, go ahead and look about again. Did you miss seeing old friends? Have you enjoyed the fiestalook of the gathering around you? Oh' yes, feel free to stop by even if your looking for an excuse to get way, be by yourself, or just plain nosey about the gathering in the party. Irvington's farmer's markets: Fresh. Fiesta.
